Emotional Freedom Technique or Tapping

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or Tapping) is based on the principle that negative emotions cause a disruption in the body’s energy system and that negative emotions contribute to physical and mental ill health.

EFT uses a tapping procedure that neutralises negative emotional energy at their source and assists in reducing the high intensity of emotion and reframe experiences and traumas.

Just like an acupuncturist would use needles on the endpoints of the meridian, EFT uses tapping on these points to bring down high levels of emotions thus allowing the person to work through issues without becoming too distressed or overwhelmed.

Tapping, in effect, calms down the fight/flight “alarm system” in our brain so the brain starts to realize that although the event or memory is still there our reaction to it has lessened.

It is a safe gentle intervention that can be taught as a way to manage stress and cope with difficult emotions.

What can EFT be used for?

EFT can be used to alleviate anxiety issues, low mood, phobias and panic attacks.  It assists people to address traumatic past experiences in a gentle and non-intrusive way.  Tapping can also be used to relieve physical pain and help with weight loss.

The technique can be taught as a self-help tool to manage anxiety, low self-esteem and simple phobias.

EFT addresses the underlying causes of trauma in a gentle and non-intrusive way thus lessening the need to “re-live” the trauma.

EFT can safely be used with children through painting or tapping on their toys with great effect.
