Life can often feel comfortable when we stick to familiar routines, surround ourselves with what we know, and avoid situations that make us feel nervous. However, some of the most rewarding moments in life happen when we take a chance, try something new, and step outside our comfort zone.

As growing up I was always looking for a challenge whether that was learning something new, travelling to more unusual places or volunteering.

The challenges didn’t need to be risky or daring but just something that stretched me out of my comfort zone.  Sometimes it was putting myself forward to play in a competitive team of badminton or squash or going to a party where I didn’t know many people.

Certainly, I felt the nerves at times but overall, the experiences have been well worth it.

There have been times where daily life felt a bit “same-y”, with work not particularly challenging, so I would seek something outside of work to make life a bit more interesting.

Every few years I would get itchy feet to travel and opt for places less known.  Dog sledding in the Artic Circle in Finland was terrifying, exhilarating, exhausting yet rewarding.  Camping in Kakadu National Park, Australia, was uncomfortable (due to the heat and insects), fascinating and amazing.   Chile was awe inspiring, cold, hot, joyful and fun.

One of the greatest benefits of stepping outside our comfort zone is building confidence. Facing something unfamiliar can feel intimidating at first, but each time we overcome a fear or challenge, we prove to ourselves that we can do difficult things. Even when things don’t go to plan, there is always something to learn. Mistakes are not failures; they are valuable lessons that help us grow and become more resilient.  In hindsight there have been things I have done which now seem foolish but got through them and survived!
As I’ve got older the new experiences have become less intense and gentler yet still stretch my boundaries.  Over this past year what new experiences have you engaged in?

Trying new things can improve our happiness and wellbeing. New experiences bring excitement, create lasting memories, and help us see life from different perspectives. They can introduce us to new friendships, open unexpected doors, and prevent us from feeling stuck in the same routine.
